O Tipper!  We met a few years ago, you were the new kid in town.   We just seemed to click, you know.   Things have been great since the very beginning when you was new.  Everything has continued to be wonderful even as things change and develop.  It's always fun to hang out and all my friends love you.  The perfect relationship!

Fastest way to this girl's heart is through her stomach, that's for sure but once I gave you my heart, you took good care of it.   You take good care of your friends, like your customers and your staff.   That's one of the things I really, really like about you.

You mean so much to me Tipper that I wanted to make you my milestone 400th review in a row because you've also got a long history here on Yelp, and a long history with me.   Thanks for being so wonderful and welcoming.

Now THIS is what I'm talking about!  Vancouver needs more of this.  It was like a healthier version of my fave thing when I eat out: a chicken burger with yam fries.  The yam fries were like hand cut with no extra garbage on them and the burger came with a gluten free bun.  AWESOME!  The chicken was delicious!  My boyfriend had a regular burger with cheese and mushrooms and bacon.  It looked so good.  He devoured it and loved it.

The service was very friendly.  (Only he didn't come by the table to ask how the meal was because if he had I would have asked for more mayo for the burger.  [I love mayo to death.  The burger could have used more sauce.]  He came at the end.  It doesn't bother me too much though since he was super nice.)  I liked that they have a sign 'seat yourselves' so we could sit where ever we wanted.  I find it annoying in a restaraunt when it's not busy and then they seat you in some crap spot so it's nice to have freedom of choice.  haha  I liked the decor with some local art and the casual vibe.  It makes me feel like I could come here anytime.

So happy to find a place that offers gluten free food that tastes so good and fresh and isn't a rip-off price served alongside glutenous food, so that it just feels like I'm normal.  We will definately go back!  Can't wait!  I want it now!

Tipper started off great. The Sever greeted me by offering a place to park bicycle inside the restaurant. I was seated at window table which I enjoy. Tipper had a large menu. I had the beef burger with Cajun spices, jalapenos and mayo. Very tasty served with a cup of Chile for $12 bucks. Coffee was good and they offer refills. View out the window included the largest Golden Arches Sign in Town and its buzy parking area to the left and Days Inn with all the charm of a Funeral Parlor to the right. Read the Vancouver Sun while waiting for my food. The server was chatty in a pleasant and noticed my blood donor sticker on my shirt told about her recent donor experience.  The Chile was very hardy but mild really a meal it's self if you like it hot there as a bottle of mango hot sauce standing by at the table. Kitchen look clean and organized and they have a neat room if the back for events. Overall I really enjoyed my visit even though I either missed or was stood up by my lunch guests although the Tipper is a little off the beaten path for it was worth the effort to find it.

A note from "C" My Name is Colin Shandler

My Name is Colin Shandler .... not "C" and I do take responsibility for my co workers.

In regards to a recent note where there isn't a way to contact the customer directly and they have posted their note for the world. It's simple just like our menu... Not Fancy - Just Fresh!  We are a good times place, and we would like to share it with fun genuine people. From time to time with all restaurants mistakes are made, food, or flavours are not what was expected etc. We fix it no fuss.

Who feels the need to get up from the table and return the food to the kitchen passthru before the server could run the remaining items. In my time as a General Manager I haven't seen anyone do that at Milestone's, SJP, A&W or Moxie's. Further; if you are not fine, please do not say that you are, that isn't genuine now is it? esp after the entire bill was taken care of, not just the person who had the incorrect meal.

Choices have been made - I do make a point of hiring genuine people who get to be them selves while they serve the food people thankfully choose to order. Wear what they like, might even show a few tattoos...

Servers not Servants.

I honor and support the calls my staff make, if they choose not to serve someone who is intoxicated, obnoxious, rude, etc... well sorry you will have to visit us another day. This also goes for the kitchen staff, if they choose not to cook something based on quality, freshness etc... then we do not serve it.

Our marketing is light due to being community focused - we do get to know a large number of our customers and they get to know us.

Once again, We fix it no fuss... it's not a big deal, we want all to be happy.

My internal approach is People, Product, Profit.

People come first!

We don't cook with Margerine, Bennys have fresh cool ingredients in them too, and almost everyone has a pocket with a few pennies.

Regards,
"C" ;)

From the wonderful breakfast menu (green eggs!!) to the delectable dinner selection, the Tipper is a must for everyone who visits and resides in Vancouver. Colin (owner), the cooks, and the servers always amplify the pleasure of dining there with good humour and top notch service. The Tipper brings joy to my tastebuds.

Bear with me as I went here a while ago but, here's the gist of how I feel about the place.

The food is good value and pretty tasty.
The place is small, so don't come with a big group, but if there's 2-4 of you? Just fine.
Definitely come to brunch.
There's a lot of really interesting art on the walls.

That's pretty much literally all I can remember, which is why I am only giving them 4 stars. That is to say that I remember enjoying the food there, but I don't remember hardly anything else about the place. I'll probably never think to go there again, but if someone says "hey, you want to check out the tipper?" I'll be all "yeah, i remember liking them!"

“Tip of the hat to the Tipper Restaurant”
4 of 5 starsReviewed 8 June 2012

See yourself as an artsy, or musical person and want to eat at the same time?
Then The Tipper is the place for you. Located in an less than iconic venue on Kingsway, The Tipper has that artistic, rustic vibe, with art on the wall, and great music at night. There is a second floor at the back of the restaurant if you are coming in with a large party during the day. And the food-a creative take on an all day breakfast, with eggs benedict and other long time favourites reinterpreted with a modern, creative vibe.

The coffee is great, you can bring your kids, and you can eat with great service, great prices, and a bit of local art and music.

The Tipper Restaurant on Kingsway, Vancouver

May 31st, 2012 by Michael Kwan

The Tipper Restaurant (3 of 3)

Many people would associate the Kingsway stretch in East Vancouver with Vietnamese restaurants. It was, after all, where we had Dot Com Pho: Free Comic Book Edition. That said, there are all kinds of great places to eat in that neighborhood. It was after Dot Com Pho that we discovered The Tipper and I made a mental note to give them a visit.

So, that’s where I decided to have lunch one day. The Tipper, which is also known as Bottle Tipper, definitely has the feel of a pub or a bar, but they are open for breakfast and lunch too. Taking a look at the menu, you’ll find that nearly everything is in the $8 to $15 range, making for a very reasonably priced meal. From what I recall, breakfast is served until about 5pm too. Most of the fare is basic and simple, including burgers, pastas, and hot wings.

It was really quiet on a weekday afternoon, but I did notice that The Tipper was reasonably busy when we walked by on Saturday. I imagine a good part of their business comes in the evenings.

The Tipper Restaurant (2 of 3)

I ordered the beef dip sandwich ($9.89). The thinly shaved roast beef was served with Swiss cheese on a toasted garlic Portuguese bun, along with hand cut fries and fresh made au jus. While I’m more accustomed to having a beef dip on a longer bun rather than a round bun, the au jus had a great flavor, as did the garlic on the bun. The fresh fries could have been crisper, but they were still very good.

This is an entirely different sandwich than what you’d get at a place like Chez Meme Baguette Bistro, but you can see that the same level of care and attention is given at The Tipper.

The Tipper Restaurant (1 of 3)

Susanne ordered the wild salmon burger ($14.89), which includes a six-ounce filet of fresh wild BC salmon, Cajun seasoning, garlic basil butter, a generous slice of real cheddar cheese, spring mix greens, tomato, and red onion. The mild cheddar was a nice complement to the medium moist fish. The Cajun seasoning wasn’t very pronounced, which allowed the salmon to shine more on its own. Instead of the fries, Susanne got the seafood chowder, which was creamy and hearty.

Restaurants like The Tipper prove that you don’t have to be fancy to be delicious. The menu items aren’t terribly innovative, but the ingredients are very fresh and everything is presented with attention to detail. Service was understandably attentive; we were only one of two tables at the time. The availability of free Wi-Fi is an added bonus.

Considering that you’d pay around $6-9 for an “extra value” meal across the street at the golden arches, you’re much better off by paying a couple dollars more to get a fresh, well-crafted meal at The Tipper instead.

    Best Meal in 2 weeks!

My wife and I had just spent 2 weeks on a Hawaii to Vancouver cruise.
After walking around all of Stanley Park on the day we arrived,
we needed to find food. Asking the desk clerk at the Days Inn,
they sent us across the street to The Tipper.
My wife ordered the Wild BC Salmon and I had the
    Jerk Shrimp and Chicken.

We both agreed, this was the best meal in 2 weeks
    - this far topped the food served on the cruise ship.
Flavor and quality was excellent and the
    service was efficient and pleasant.
Looking forward to our next visit to Vancouver just to return here.

@TheTipper as Brenna F sees it

The Tipper Restaurant nestled in Kingsway and Victoria intersection is the kind of place where owner Colin Shandler demonstrates that people and the product come before profit. It is also the kind of place that customers have coined as one of the city’s hidden gems. “Simple, unassuming, and humbly fresh” says Shandler, describing both the atmosphere and the menu creations. Something he accredits to the hand-picked produce and meats from within the community. ‘Community’ is definitely the emphasis here. Local art hangs on the wall, musicians perform in the Review Room, and the window seats are usually filled with writers, students, and families. The Review Room in the back not only provides a venue for performers but also plays host to community events on any given day of the week. When the Revue Room, a private performance and meeting space set in the back half of the restaurant isn’t housing local music collectives The Tipper hosts AA meetings Thursday and Sunday of every week, and a parents and tot play group on Fridays. Whether enjoying free run eggs and bacon for breakfast (served every day until 5pm), or a free run “Cliff and Ed” cajun chicken burger with home cut yam fries for dinner, the menu also includes several vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, and home-made hollandaise sauce for weekend bennies, and other home-made sauces and soups all week. However, The Tipper experience does not end with what comes out of the kitchen, the bar too consists of unique spirits and local draught, and Vancouver’s own JJ Bean coffee. The service staff is mature and laid back, as is the general style of service that Shandler aims for. The fun and fresh staff are always attentive and aware but never overbearing or pushy, and they’ll always share a laugh or a story. The community vibe is apparent in the way the staff interacts both with guests and each other. For the Kensington Cedar Cottage neighborhood, the Tipper is the spot!
